What Happened When We Missed the Last Bus in Cartagena

We had one job that evening: catch the last bus back to our hotel from a beach an hour outside the old city. We spent one extra ten minutes watching the sunset finish, and that was that — the bus was gone, and so, apparently, was any other bus for the night.

The panic phase lasted about five minutes

No phone signal to speak of, a stretch of road with no visible taxis, and a rapidly darkening sky. We did the thing you're not supposed to do and just started walking in the general direction of town, mostly out of nervous energy more than any actual plan.

The kindness that actually saved the night

He made a phone call we couldn't follow, gestured for us to sit on an overturned crate near his stand, and about twenty minutes later, his cousin showed up in an old sedan that functioned as an unofficial taxi for the neighborhood. The ride back cost less than we expected and came with a full, animated tour of local landmarks we drove past, delivered entirely in Spanish, most of which we understood maybe a third of and enjoyed completely.

What we actually learned from getting stuck

Cartagena's old town at night, arrived at slightly frazzled and enormously relieved, felt different than it would have if we'd arrived on schedule and unbothered. The stress of the missed bus made the actual arrival — walking back through the lit-up plaza, hearing music spilling out of a bar — land harder than it would have otherwise. Getting mildly, briefly stuck somewhere unfamiliar has a way of making the eventual resolution feel earned rather than just convenient.

The practical takeaway, for what it's worth

Have a backup plan for transport whenever you're heading somewhere without reliable phone signal, and don't assume the "last bus" schedule is as rigid as posted. But also — sometimes the missed bus turns out fine, and it's worth not treating every deviation from the plan as a crisis.
