Inside a Real Moroccan Hammam

Most visitors experience the hammam through a hotel spa version — softly lit, scented, priced accordingly, and genuinely relaxing. A neighborhood hammam, the kind Moroccans actually use weekly, is a different experience almost entirely, and worth understanding before you decide which version you want.

It's a weekly ritual, not an occasional indulgence

For many Moroccan families, the hammam is a normal, regular part of life — a place to properly clean, socialize, and unwind, often visited weekly rather than as a special occasion. Neighborhood hammams reflect that: functional, communal, unpretentious, and priced for locals rather than tourists.

The black soap and the scrub are the actual point

Beldi soap, a dark, olive-oil-based traditional soap, gets worked into the skin and left to sit before a vigorous exfoliation with a rough mitt called a kessa. It is genuinely intense — noticeably more thorough than most visitors expect from a spa treatment — and leaves skin feeling different afterward in a way that's hard to replicate any other way.

Gender-separated, and that's normal

Traditional hammams operate on separate schedules or spaces for men and women, and modesty norms differ from a typical Western spa — worth knowing before you go so nothing catches you off guard. Ask your riad or hotel for a recommendation to a hammam that's comfortable for first-time visitors if you're unsure.

Choosing between neighborhood and tourist-oriented

A tourist-oriented hammam, often attached to a spa or riad, offers more privacy, English-speaking staff, and a gentler introduction — a genuinely reasonable choice for a first visit. A real neighborhood hammam is louder, more communal, and considerably cheaper, but comes with less hand-holding and an expectation that you understand the basic etiquette going in. Neither is the "correct" choice — it depends on what kind of experience you're actually looking for.
