Overview

A capital genuinely built on top of an empire

Mexico City sits on the drained bed of Lake Texcoco, and its historic center was genuinely built directly atop Tenochtitlan, the Aztec capital, the ruins of the Templo Mayor still sit exposed right next to the modern cathedral. The whole city is genuinely sinking, several inches a year in places, a real consequence of drawing groundwater from the same lakebed for centuries.

Practical Note

At roughly 2,240 meters (7,350 ft), the altitude here is genuinely higher than Denver's, some visitors feel it for a day or two. Teotihuacan, the pyramid complex an hour outside the city, predates the Aztecs by centuries, they inherited and named the ruins, they didn't build them.
