The Forbidden City, the former imperial palace, is genuinely the largest palace complex in the world, roughly 980 buildings behind walls that housed emperors for nearly 500 years, now a UNESCO World Heritage site open to the public. The Great Wall, reachable on a genuine day trip from the city, stretches for thousands of kilometers, the Mutianyu section is generally less crowded than the more famous Badaling.
